A Bangladeshi expatriate living in the United Kingdom was sentenced to five days in jail on Thursday after election officials accused him of disrupting voting and tearing a ballot during the country’s 13th National Parliamentary Election.
The man, Golam Rasul Russell, 50, was detained at a polling station inside Mostafapur Government Primary School in Inatganj Union, in the Habiganj-1 constituency. Authorities said he remained inside the voting room longer than permitted, refused to leave when instructed and behaved aggressively toward election workers.
Local administrators said Mr. Russell also tore his own ballot paper and interfered with the voting process. Security personnel stationed at the polling center, including members of the Army deployed on election duty, took him into custody shortly after 1 p.m.
An executive magistrate later conducted a summary proceeding under a mobile court and sentenced him to five days’ imprisonment. He was transferred to the Nabiganj police station to serve the sentence.
Officials said the matter was handled promptly to prevent further disruption at the polling center.
