Consumers in several markets across Habiganj town, including Shayestanagar and Chowdhury Bazar, have expressed frustration after a sudden increase in rooster prices. Allegations have emerged that poultry roosters are being sold at inflated prices under the label “cock,” while weak market supervision has further worsened the situation.
A visit to local markets revealed that poultry roosters are being sold at around 350 taka per kilogram under the name “cock.” In comparison, regular poultry chickens are being sold for 180 to 200 taka per kilogram. In some cases, sellers are reportedly marketing these roosters as local (deshi) varieties and charging up to 650 taka per kilogram, which has angered many buyers.
Customers claim that sellers are providing misleading information about the breed of the roosters. In addition to charging higher prices, some buyers allege they are also being given less weight than they pay for. As a result, many consumers say they are facing financial losses.
One customer at Shayestanagar market said, “Poultry roosters are being sold as local breeds at much higher prices. Not only are we being charged more, but the weight is also not accurate.”
Local traders argue that the price hike is due to increased feed costs and reduced supply. However, buyers believe that some sellers are using these reasons as an excuse to make excessive profits.
Concerned residents say the absence of regular market monitoring has allowed dishonest traders to take advantage of the situation. They are calling on the authorities to strengthen oversight and take effective steps to control the market. Locals believe that regular monitoring would help ensure fair pricing and reduce the suffering of consumers.
