A mobile court in Baniachong Upazila fined two business establishments for violating consumer protection laws during an inspection conducted Thursday in the town’s Borobazar and Notunbazar areas.
According to officials, the drive was carried out on February 19 as part of efforts to stabilize prices of essential commodities and ensure food safety ahead of Ramadan. Authorities imposed a total fine of 4,000 taka on the two businesses.
The penalties were issued under Sections 38 and 41 of the Consumer Rights Protection Act, 2009. Each establishment was fined 2,000 taka for failing to display price lists and for selling expired products.
The operation was led by Baniachong Upazila Nirbahi Officer and Executive Magistrate Mahmuda Begum Sathi. Officers from Baniachong Police Station, led by Officer in Charge Sharif Ahmed, provided support during the drive.
Speaking after the operation, Ms. Sathi said authorities would maintain strict monitoring to prevent traders from exploiting consumers in pursuit of excessive profits during Ramadan. She added that similar drives would continue in the public interest.
During the inspection, she also warned other traders in the market to conduct business honestly and ensure accurate pricing and product quality.
