Police in Lakhai Upazila have recovered the body of a 10-year-old girl from a mustard field in a rural wetland area, authorities said Saturday.
The child, identified as Monsura Akter, was found in a mustard field in the Muriak Haor area under Muriak Union. She was the daughter of Tenu Mia of Muriak village.
According to police and local residents, Monsura left home Saturday morning with two classmates to cut grass in the haor, as she reportedly did on other days. While the two other children returned home later that afternoon, Monsura did not. Her family began searching nearby areas but were unable to locate her.
On Saturday afternoon, local residents discovered her body lying in a mustard field and alerted authorities. Police arrived at the scene, recovered the body and sent it to Habiganj Sadar Hospital for an autopsy.
The officer in charge of Lakhai Police Station, Mohammad Zahidul Haque, said the girl had failed to return home after going to the haor to cut grass. “We have recovered her body from a mustard field,” he said, adding that preliminary findings suggest the possibility of foul play.
Investigators are working to determine the circumstances surrounding the death, and police said further details would be released following the autopsy and ongoing inquiry.
